It is always appreciated, especially during this trying time that we ALL are facing. As the 2021 season approaches I (along with everyone else) am glad to see the New Year upon us. Let’s hope it turns out to be much better than last, and that the virus eases and finally goes away. Thankfully, I am not stuck inside otherwise I would’ve jumped off a bridge by now. This upcoming season will mark my 31st year in business. I have been able to enjoy this longevity for the most part by being a one man operation for the last 16 years, while only using subcontractors for the work that I do not perform myself. I provide the type of service that I feel people can relate to. By not having 3 or 4 people on the lawn knocking the service out in a few minutes and moving on to the next one, I can concentrate and treat every lawn as if it were my own. And, by doing so, hope to achieve the best results possible even if Mother Nature throws me a curveball every now and then. As I say... it may be your lawn, but my name is all over it. This is why I strive to get your lawn in the best shape and to look as good as possible. So, in order to achieve these results,... --- - Published: 2018-01-11 - Modified: 2024-04-02 - URL: https://laytonslawns.com/about/ It is amazing how time fly's. I started in the green industry 35 years ago in 1984 after having previously worked in the restaurant industry. I have always enjoyed being outdoors, so this was a natural fit for me. After having worked for a national lawn care company for 7 years and gaining as much knowledge as possible, I felt the time was right to start my own business in 1991. As with any new business, the first couple of years were tough. However, business slowly began to increase and in 1995 my company was pretty much established. As I grew, the focus continued to be on the quality of work done. ‘Do the job right and show that you care, and people will seek you out’ That mindset continues to this day! I downsized the company in 2005 after years of trying to grow it. I have now been a solo owner/operator ever since who personally performs all applications. When needed, I use licensed and insured subcontractors for the more labor intensive projects. 2019 marks my 28th year in business and I have not looked back. I still enjoy working with Mother Nature and all she has to offer! My wife Janet and I live in Newark, Delaware with our dogs, two Shitz Zu and Yorkie mixes (Shorkies), Willie and Harley. When time permits, Janet and I love to go to the Florida Keys in the winter as well as taking some long weekend trips with friends in season on... --- - Published: 2018-01-11 - Modified: 2024-04-02 - URL: https://laytonslawns.com/lawn-care/ Lawn 4 weeks after seeding Lawn 6 weeks after seeding Our customized fertilization programs work for you, not against you! All lawns are not created equal! Just like no 2 people are alike, neither are 2 lawns. Some need more attention, some need less. When it comes to feeding your lawn, the products that are used are best suited for the turf in our area, also called the "Transition Zone". Typically, that means Turf Type Tall Fescue, Fine Fescue, Bluegrass and Perennial Rye grasses. On a lesser note, we do see and have lawns with Zoysia and Bermuda grass mixed in, but in most cases, these grasses are treated more like a "weed". That is because they are a warm season turf. In the rare case that a lawn is mostly either of these two, then they are treated as if they were in a warm season zone. Based on your lawns condition, it might be necessary to develop a more intense program to address any problematic areas. Neglected lawns will usually require additional applications to get them back in shape. Once they have become established, then the nutrient applications would consist of the following: Early Spring: Low nitrogen slow release fertilizer with organics to help avoid excessive spring growth Late Spring: A second round of slow release low nitrogen with organics to help maintain color Summer: Low nitrogen fertilizer 100% non-burning slow release formulation Early Fall: Specially formulated fertilizer blend with Bio-stimulants and other organics to aid in recovery... --- - Published: 2018-01-11 - Modified: 2024-04-02 - URL: https://laytonslawns.com/weed-control/ Pre-emergent Controls: One heavy rate application applied in the spring to control crabgrass break through. If needed, a second application would be applied based on your lawns condition. Pre-emergent can also be used in the fall to control certain annual grasses and broadleaf weeds if needed. Post-emergent Controls: These are applied where needed to control broadleaf weeds, grassy weeds and outbreaks on a “spot spray basis” only. Complete broadcasting is done only if absolutely necessary. --- - Published: 2018-01-11 - Modified: 2024-04-02 - URL: https://laytonslawns.com/seeding-and-aeration/ Lawn 4 weeks after seeding Lawn 6 weeks after seeding Slit Seeding Slit seeding is done by using a machine with steel blades that spin at a high rpm and slice through the turf and into the soil. The narrow slits are approximately ½” deep and as the seeder moves forward, the seed is dropped into these narrow slits. Best results occur when you run the machine in two different directions at a 90 degree angle to your first pass. By applying half the amount of seed on each, you ensure that the entire area has been addressed and has received the correct amount of seed. Slit seeding is usually done when a complete renovation is needed, or when addressing thin or bare dirt areas. Core Aeration Core aeration is the process of pulling plugs of soil and depositing them on top of the grass. The cores are approximately ½” in diameter and approximately 3” in length. This creates thousands of small pockets throughout that will catch and hold air, nutrients and water. It will also help in stimulating root development. Core aeration can help reduce moderate compaction issues. Heavily compacted clay soils such as new construction, should have compost and other amendments added in at the time of aerating. Core aeration will help lawns with thatch levels of no more than 3/4". Lawns with thatch levels above that or more need to have a complete renovation done. --- - Published: 2018-01-11 - Modified: 2024-04-02 - URL: https://laytonslawns.com/insect-control/ Both granular and liquid control products are used throughout the season depending upon the particular pest. Preventative Insect Controls: Chinch bugs, sod webworms and grubs just love to feed on your lawn. While there are other potential damaging insects, these seem to be the three most common insects that we deal with in this area. Left unchecked, they can pose major problems. Controls are applied for these insects during the late spring and summer months as a preventative measure. One application to control grubs will give season long protection under normal conditions. Surface insect controls, for the most part, can provide season long control, but is not guaranteed. Thatch layers over 3/4" may not allow the material to move to the desired location to control either of these pests. Majority of insect damage shows up during the summer stress periods and can appear to look like a dry area or "Hot" spots. Unfortunately, by the time you realize that it is insect damage, you are most likely looking at a large expense in repairing your lawn. It is my opinion that you prevent a potential problem from occurring, rather than running the risk, and the added expense of having to repair a damaged lawn. --- - Published: 2018-01-11 - Modified: 2024-04-02 - URL: https://laytonslawns.com/ornamental-shrub-care/ Trees and shrubs are essential elements in your landscape. They add texture and color and establish focal points. They are an investment and keeping them healthy can save you from having to make costly replacements. Your trees and shrubs are subject to a variety of obstacles throughout the year. From invasive pests and disease to severe weather changes and conditions. By monitoring for insects and disease, actions can take place to help prevent problems from major issues. To help plants thrive, you need to increase the soil profile that your shrubs are planted in. You do this by adding the right amount of nutrients at the proper time during the season so as to boost your soils biology. Healthy soil will produce healthier plants, which stand a better chance to ward off problems than plants that are stressed. Shrub care programs are created to fit your landscapes specific needs. If you have had a particular problem with a shrub or tree, chances are one of several factors are involved... such as poor soil conditions, improper planting, environmental conditions and even a plant that was not healthy to begin with in the first place. The truth is, most established trees and shrubs that have been planted in the proper soil conditions and proper area have very few issues year to year. Keeping your plants healthy and strong goes a long way in preventing problems in the first place. If a problem does occur, healthy plants can stave off these problems better... --- - Published: 2018-01-11 - Modified: 2024-04-02 - URL: https://laytonslawns.com/news/ Jack - please don't write content here - Create a 'Post' and it will be automatically put in front of the last bulletin. A light rate of slow release nitrogen fertilizer along with organic nutrients was applied to help bring your lawn out of winter dormancy. By applying light rates of fertilizer, the lawn receives the nutrients it needs without over-stimulating top growth, which could cause the turf to become susceptible to insects and diseases. 2. Pre-emergent crabgrass control was applied and under normal conditions, the barrier it creates will last all season. Heavy raking, digging or cutting too short needs to be avoided at all times, as doing so will break the barrier, while cutting short will allow the soil to heat up and let weed seeds germinate. 3. A liquid broadleaf weed control was applied today on a spot spray basis only. Broadcast applications are only done if the lawn has heavy weed pressure present. A sticking agent is added so the product adheres to the weed. This allows the weed control to still be effective should rainfall come after the treatment has been applied. 4. If needed, seeding and/or aeration were performed today on small areas using certified seed for sun and shade conditions. An additional charge may have been applied on larger sections if not part of your program. 5. __ Soil sample was taken and sent out for analysis. You will receive a copy of the analysis.
